Derek holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science (‘96) from Clemson University. Derek joined the Department of Agriculture in 1997 as a Food Safety Officer regulating manufactured and wholesale foods. From 2007-2012, he managed the Food Safety Department overseeing inspections, federal contracts, policy and regulations throughout SC. He has also spent time in private industry as a salesman for a distribution facility and recently as a Quality Manager at a RTE meat facility (Oscar Mayer) employing over 3,000. He returned to SCDA in July 2013 as Assistant Commissioner overseeing the Consumer Protection Division which includes Laboratory Services, Consumer Services, Produce Safety, Food& Feed Safety, Grading & Inspection, Metrology, as well as the Industrial Hemp Program. In his free time, Derek enjoys family life (4 daughters, two in college (Presbyterian, Clemson), lake life (fishing, boating, relaxing), and political life (Derek serves as Mayor for the Town of Prosperity).
